What to expect

After contacting me, I will aim to respond the same day, and certainly within 24 hours. If we agree to proceed to a consultation, we will book a face-to-face assessment.

My consulting rooms are easily accessible from Cheltenham, have good parking facilities, and are fully accessible. My availability is generally on weekdays between 10am and 4pm.

Payment is required to secure the appointment, and you will be sent a booking and payment link as part of the intake process.

Before you come to the assessment, I will ask you to complete a comprehensive intake questionnaire. This will help to characterise the nature of your difficulties, your medical history, and your current state of health and well-being.

The initial assessment consultation typically lasts one hour and is conducted in person, in my private and comfortable consulting room.

If you have not seen a psychiatrist before, it may be helpful to know that a psychiatric consultation takes the form of a semi-structured, one-to-one conversation in which we explore your current and past health and wellbeing. We will look at the parts of your life where you feel you are struggling the most and explore your current experiences and thinking patterns.

By the end of the initial consultation, we aim to have a working formulation—an understanding of the core issues, contributing factors, and an initial treatment plan.

Treatment plans are individualised and vary depending on the person, their needs, and their preferences. I usually structure treatment into phases: shorter-term (stabilisation), medium-term (recovery) and longer-term (maintaining health and wellbeing). In the initial stages, we will typically focus on stabilisation.

Together, we will try to think about the entire you in your biological, psychological and social context. We will build an understanding of the parts of your life that are causing and perpetuating ill-health and we will devise a holistic support and intervention plan made up of multiple strategies to intervene upon and change those parts.

A treatment plan will consider strategies for reducing symptoms and distress, improving sleep and energy, improving functioning, optimising health and building future resilience.

My approach is pragmatic and holistic. Recovery often requires multiple targeted interventions, each contributing incremental gains. We’ll build a personalised treatment plan combining evidence-based medication with strategies to support your nutrition, sleep, hormonal balance, and overall well-being. I’ll also equip you with practical tools for calm and stability, and guide you toward psychological therapies most likely to benefit you.

If medication forms part of the agree treatment plan, I will provide a private prescription which can be fulfilled by most high street or online pharmacies. In some cases, we may also arrange investigations (such as blood tests), and I will support you with these as needed.

After the consultation, I will send you a written summary of my opinion and the treatment plan. With your consent, I can also share this with your GP.

Most patients benefit from ongoing support through follow-up appointments in the weeks and months that follow. During this time, we will continue to refine our understanding of your difficulties and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

In my experience, recovery takes time—but it is always possible. If my approach resonates with you, please get in touch to explore working together.
